Making Art for Inspiring Women in Huron

On May 6, 2020, 28 women from Huron County were honoured and celebrated at the annual Inspiring Women in Huron Awards hosted by Huron Women Shelter and YMCA Gala Dinner.

Since 2016, I have had the privilege of creating a piece of artwork to represent each of the inspiring women nominated by someone in the community. As you can see in the gallery below, I have chosen different ways to create a collective composition and include each woman within it.

Once the overall shape is established, I read through all the bios and write down impressions that I get from reading. Then I go through a brief feeling of overwhelm because all of the women are amazing and how do you contain it all in one image? I quickly get over that and relax and enjoy the process to allow the impressions to take their visual form. Often the image of heart and hands in various formations best represents the women who have done a myriad of things out of a love for their community.

In 2016 and 2017, I mapped out a rectangular quilt design, a symbol of collective creation as it is often something that is made amongst a community of women.

In 2018, I created a heart with hexagonal spaces for each woman, like those found in a bee hive community. Hearts are always present in these images. It is true that inspiring women create and make things happen from the heart.

In 2019, I wanted to make a spiral wave symbolizing women making waves and making change. Contained within are circles to represent each woman. I also place the youngest woman first and the oldest last in the centre just because I knew their ages mentioned in their bio. The gallery below shows the development of these images.

This year 28 women were nominated so I wanted to make good use of space to fit everyone in while doing something a bit different from previous years. I returned to the quilt but made it using diamond shapes to create a Diamond Sun Love Quilt. As in other years, I also created a map to identify each woman in the design.

Truly, it is a work of heart. Thank you Inspiring Women in Huron for being the catalyst in these creations. <3
